Base stations are two way radios that are designed to be located in a single, fixed location. They are often somewhat large and heavy, and are generally connected to an external antenna. With base stations, while you lose portability you generally gain considerable power and range. Often, a base station is simply a mobile radio installed in a frame along with a power supply.
Don't forget, an antenna is required! To get the best range, use a base antenna installed outside and mounted as high as possible. If you're looking for a quick antenna solution, a mag mount mobile antenna resting on a metal surface (such as a file cabinet) will get the job done.
