Communication is crucial to win in paintball. Large teams without proper, coordinated, precise and
timely radio communication will always be defeated by smaller teams who embrace and correctly utilize
radios. When a team can work as one and coordinate the most force at their opponent’s weak points,
victory is assured no matter what other factors may be against them.
When shopping for a two way radio to be used in paintball, the following features will be most important:
- Range – Playing fields differ, teams may play on flat terrain and then switch to hilly the next day. Players move fast and far and the range of the radio is important.
- Battery Life - Without power outlets being readily available, keeping your radio charged is a big concern during play. Nothing is worse than being in the middle of a game and having your radio go dead and the weak point that you notice go unexploited. Look for models with extremely long battery life, those that have the ability to operate on standard AA or AAA batteries in a pinch.
- Size/Weight – Carrying a heavy two-way radio around the field is very impractical. While running around with all the other gear, a heavy radio will only add an extra weight burden and possibly slow you down. Because an extremely high powered radio isn't required for coverage on most playing fields, a small and lightweight radio may be a better choice.
- Headset Support – Having a squawking radio will only give away your position and interfere with your team’s communication. A comfortable earpiece or headset is a requirement to ensure precise communication between all members of your team.
- NOAA Weather Information – Knowing that severe weather is approaching in advance is extremely important, it may give you that tactical advantage you were seeking.
