I really like this radio. It has a good feel and weight to it. Easy to program using Chirp software. I did have a problem going from VFO to Channel Memory, after downloading to the radio. But then I found this blog:

I figured it out… but it wouldnt allow anything above 146 mhz…i found a post on another forum that said "when pwr is off hold down #2 key as you turn on pwr…mide 2 msg will appear then release #2 key and it booted up and allowed full freq access.

Set up by hand easy

Sorry but this is my first HT.
Nice feeling unit but programming is a challenge.
Using the RT Systems software is straight forward.
However, I have set up channels and named them but cannot figure out how to make them display on the HT screen.
Instructions are missing this and I cannot find any info on this at all.
Is it NOT possible to display the channel names instead of the frequency like I can in my Yaesu and Baofengs?

Purchase experience was smooth and efficient; even when they were out of stock. Fat finger programming was a bit of a challenge but not too difficult. I noted the radio body heated up during hi power transmitting. I changed out the stock antenna for a signal stick and that took care of it. Capable unit with a wide range of functionality.

This is a great radio to throw in a go kit ,
It’s not as costly as a Made in Japan ht
But the value is there, tested power over

First, I like this radio, but I had intended to purchase the KG-UV8H. I wanted the KG-UV8H because it is so like the KG-935G that I have for GMRS. I was impressed with the build quality of the 935G. I wanted to be able to share batteries and chargers, etc. They are not compatible with the UV9P.
The KG-UV9P is just not up to the quality of the 935G. Some examples: 1) The TINY screw that attaches the belt clip snapped off when I tried to fasten the clip. Also, the clip attaches to the battery, not the radio. 2) The cover for the computer cord (on the side) is flimsy and does not seem like it will be as protective as the one on the 935G. To make it worse, the TINY screw that holds it down is not 'captured'. So any time you need to remove the cover, there is a good chance of losing the screw. 3) The screen is difficult to see even impossible it you are outside. There is not provision for a back-light when in standby mode. It just goes black.
I still like this radio. A big plus is that it is CHIRP compatible. Even though the build quality is not what I expected, it is still solid. Keep in mind that I was looking for a radio similar to the KG-935G. I really intended to get the UV9P, but that was a shopping error on my part. If in doubt, go ahead and spend the extra $10.00 for the KG-UV8H, I wish I had.

It's been good to me so far! There's very few that are as comparable in price, quality, watts, and capabilities. The rubber duck is surprisingly decent on it. I can easily reach my local repeater 3.5 miles away from my house in the middle of a neighborhood surrounded by obstructions. From my yard I failed to reach a repeater 12 miles away, but I had a fellow ham 8 miles away respond that he could understand me clearly. This type of screen is great inside but in daylight it can get washed out. Be careful of the cheap belt clip screws, they break easy with very little effort and can get stuck in threads. Luckily there was nothing on the other side of the screw hole so with it detached I was able to remove the broken screw easily with a drill bit without damaging anything.

Being my first HT, I wasn't sure if the extra $$$ over the cost of the Baofeng UV-5R (suggested by friends) was worth it. IT WAS!! Haven't had any issues that I wasn't able to easily figure out, and found some features I never even thought about using. The buying experience with buytwowayradios.com has also been pleasant. Wasn't in a rush so opted for the extended delivery time - still got it in two days.

Radio is what it says it is, my problem is with the antenna that was recommended to me from BTWR. It does not fit my radio. I feel like they were just trying to shut me up and finish the sale. Could have just been a mistake also. We are human

Excellent radio with a slight learning curve for a new ham. Radio arrived very quickly. First charge only took a few hours. 2nd charge is super slow...10 hours and still not fully charged. I will be calling customer support tomorrow

The Radio came as expected. The quality was also as expected. Power was a bit lower than advertised but still good.
However the down side for me was that UPS shipping charges were 1/3 rd the cost of the radio. Shipping to Canada is too expensive.

The radio has a solid build, a large color screen and good features. No problem with programing as it’s CHIRP compatible. You will need a special software if you eant to expend the Tx frequency range.

However there are couple things you should serious consider if you’re thinking to get this Wouxun KG-UV9P:

1. The power output is about 8W on 2M but only around 6W on 70cm measured on my unit.
2. The stock antenna has high SWR (>3 on 70cm and >2 on 2M), pretty much useless even it says “High Gain Antenna” on the antenna. I didn’t expect the stock antenna to be very good at range but at least the SWR should be <2.
3. The display is almost not visible in direct sunlight.

I have to say I am a bit regret making this purchase, and BuyTwoWayRadios’ return policy is very strict so make sure to read the terms before you order. If you’re looking for a “multi-band” & “high-power” HT, I would recommend KG-UV9D Mate instead.

Radio is a lot of fun to operate and enjoy the quality and reception quality

Excellent radio with a major shortcoming the screen is unviewable outside in daylight. Even a $20 baofeng has a better screen. I'll leave this radio at home and be shopping around for a HT I can enjoy outside.

The sale was great and got my radio really quick. It is a really great radio. Good Tx and Rcv audio. Menu is easy to follow. Hardly looked at the manual.
BUT, I sheared a screw off trying to tighten down the belt clip on the battery. Turns out the screws were to long and is a known issue. Test your screws first. More info here.

I received the UV9P quickly and everything was in order. I was able to set it all up with Chirp and the radio is performing as I had hoped. Low power reaches my repeater with no problems and high power make simplex connections for miles.

This is a nice radio. Has plenty of features I'm not going to list. Feels rugged, puts out a good signal even with the supplied antenna (which is pretty good), even better with something longer. Have had it only a month. Do not know how long it will last. Hoping its longer than my radios from that "other manufacturer".. So my big complaint on this one.. The screen is BACKLIT, not LCD. Like old smart-phones, you cannot make the screen BRIGHT enough to see in bright sunlight...

Battery life is incredible!!
Radio feels really good in hand and works well, only issue I've had is the screws that attach the belt clip are to long and doesn't fully secure the clip but two washers and it's good to go.
Overall a decent radio for the price.

Good solid radio, well built. Some frustration with programming manually, but called Buy Two Way Radio and received excellent help from them. I believe the gentleman that helped me said his name was Rick. He was so kind about helping me as I was so frustrated after trying to program the radio for several days that I was giving him confused answers. He hung in there and got me on track, and in short order it was done and understandable to me a newbie. Excellent Company and personnel, will always go to them first for future radio purchases.

Nice radio overall and quite sturdy. I just which programming using software were more straight-forward. The PCO-001 cable I ordered with it won't connect to the Wouxun software program nor to CHIRP. I guess I will just have to settle for the on-board programming interface.

This is a solid dual-band HT with a lot of useful features. The included software works fine for programming, and it has nice crisp audio.

The only negatives are that the display is not visible in direct sunlight and the output power, at least on the radio I purchased, is 6 watts maximum on 2 Meters. It's advertised as high power output, but 6 watts is a bit underwhelming. The three output levels are 2, 4, and 6 watts on 2 Meters.

Overall, it's still a good value, and I would highly recommend it.

The first radio that was sent had some intermittent issues. The response from the service dept. was very quick, and I was issued a return order right away. Because of the distance away the turn around time took awhile ( I'm on the west coast). Thanks, Buy Two Radio. I now have a fully functional radio.

I wanted a radio to be able to use as a scanner to monitor local emergency services. Not knowing which radio to go with I contacted buy two way radios and spoke with Taylor. I explained what I was trying to do with the radio and from that point this specific model was recommended. Now I'm still getting used to the functions of the radio but the quality is exceptional and it was able to do everything I needed it to do. I highly recommend the radio but even more than that I recommend this company. Not only are they knowledgeable but they seem to care about the customer figuring out exactly what will work best for them.

Have had some time to set this up using both Chirp and Wouxun programming. It was easier to use Chirp to figure out the set up and then was able to figure out the Wouxun programming after that. My first radio was the Baofeng uv5r5 and feel that this is an upgrade with the higher power and color screen and the additional bands- I am definitely a self taught newbie but I research very intensely before purchasing any product. If you are on the fence as I was, you really can't go wrong buying this radio. I recommend it.!

As a newbie to GMRS (KG-805G) & Ham (KG-UV9P), I combined the reviews and price points, and these were great buys. I struggled a bit with getting Chirp set up correctly, as I am also midstream on preparing for the Technician's Test, but it's now work close to what I had hoped, and I'm sure I will be fine tuning over time.

As a side note, the UV9P came in very handy this weekend when I received notifications via the Colorado Connection network of Repeaters warning that I-70 was closed due to a Fatal Accident, and it save me from sitting in a parking lot for 4 hours waiting on the accident investigation to complete.

I look forward to growing my Ham & Amateur Radio skills.

Great little radio. I use it in the truck with a magnetic mount antenna. Plenty of power to hit the local repeaters. Lots of good features. Radio feels very solid in the hand. Programming is a breeze using CHIRP.

Overall an fine radio. Dual simultaneous receive works as advertised. CHIRP will program it, if you tell CHIRP it's a KG-UV9D Plus.

Some minor drawbacks: the display is sharp but small, so bring your reading glasses. The belt clip attaches to the battery pack (not the radio) with screws, so get a clip for each of your spare batteries if you care. The two knobs on top are channel and volume; squelch is a menu item. The voice prompts are in English with a Chinese accent.

I bought this for satellite communication. Works great with an Elk Antenna. Nice being able to transmit and receive with this radio without acrobatics! Highly recommended!
